Living on a college campus helps students develop independence and maturity and offers enriching life experiences. SMC policy requires all full-time, unmarried students between the ages of 17 and 21 on the first day of class to live in campus housing for the fall and spring semesters unless they live at a permanent address with a legal parent/guardian in Spartanburg County.

New students who do not qualify to commute must submit a request for exemption by July 1. If a student deposits to SMC after this date, they must live on campus. Additional questions/requests for information on this policy and appeal process may be directed to the Office of Community Life at _communitylife@smcsc.edu.

Incoming Freshmen who are under 21 years of age on the first day of class and do not reside with a parent/legal guardian in Spartanburg County must generally live residentially on campus according to SMC policy (exceptions will be made for married students and those who are not enrolled full-time). For extenuating circumstances, additional exceptions may be granted (but are not guaranteed) on a case-by-case basis, but will require the student to seek an appeal through the Office of Community Life.
